Openvia Mobility signs collaboration agreement with GMV to promote NeoRoads, its smart connected roads initiative

Openvia Mobility, Globalvia’s technology and innovation platform, has signed a collaboration agreement with technology group GMV as part of its NeoRoads initiative, which focuses on the development of connected, safe, and sustainable roads.

The agreement, signed on Friday 12 January 2024, was reached with GMV’s General Management Office for Intelligent Transportation Systems, which Openvia, as a mobility services operator, considers to be a reference in connected vehicle and road solutions.

The main goal of this partnership is to jointly explore and develop solutions that meet connected road use cases by leveraging the V2X communications technology stack at both ends of the segment – on-road and in-vehicle – with a particular focus on 5G-V2X cellular-based connectivity technology.

The aim of the NeoRoads initiative is to provide road operators with a complete package of services and technologies that will enable them to digitalize their infrastructure, thus improve their operations and maintenance, and adapt to new types of traffic and the ever-changing needs of their end users. As its main benefits, NeoRoads will make it possible to:

- Optimize and streamline road operations, improve the use of resources and the speed of decision-making and response, and increase road safety conditions for all stakeholders: drivers, motorway workers, vulnerable users, etc.

- Adapt to new types of electric and connected vehicle traffic and offer new services tailored to the needs of end users. This will allow for greater enrichment of the entire mobility and infrastructure ecosystem, with technology enhancing environmental, social, and economic sustainability and providing stakeholders with greater resilience in increasingly uncertain times and contexts.

- Make infrastructure maintenance activities more efficient and sustainable by preventing failures and addressing deficiencies before they occur.

GMV will play a key role in this Openvia project when it comes to using C-V2X communications and other ITS elements as enabling technologies to develop use cases, including those related to road safety: road works ahead, cooperative maneuvers between vehicles and infrastructure, and many others, with the aim of revitalizing and updating the added value that traditional operators can offer to their road users in the new era.

“For us, the key to success is collaboration with strategic players in our mobility and technology ecosystem. We firmly believe that this alliance with GMV will open the door for us to make great strides in our connected and smart roads, which will translate into real use cases that will have an impact on our users and society at large.” – Fernando Vallejo Lázaro, Managing Director of Openvia Mobility

“We are delighted to be working with Openvia to deliver connected vehicle and road solutions. With our combined experience and expertise, we will deliver innovative, cost-effective, and reliable solutions that meet the current needs of operators around the world.” – Miguel Ángel Martínez Olagüe, Intelligent Transportation Systems General Manager.
