Copernicus ENhanced Tools for Anticipative response to climate change in the emergency and secURity domain

The CENTAUR project (Copernicus Emergency Management Service and Copernicus Security Service Enhancements in Risk Assessment and Situational Awareness) aims to address societal challenges arising from climate change threats by developing and demonstrating new service components for the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) and the Copernicus Service on Support to EU External and Security Actions (Copernicus SESA).

Key Objectives

  • Enhance situational awareness and preparedness for climate change impacts, particularly in complex emergencies and multidimensional security crises.
  • Anticipate crisis events and their potential cascading effects, contributing to resilience and effective adaptation.
  • Develop an early warning system that triggers alerts when predefined thresholds for crisis indicators are reached.

Methodology

CENTAUR enriches information from CEMS and Copernicus SESA to better characterize urban floods and food and water insecurity events.

  1. Urban Floods:
    • Develop and integrate a prototype urban flood layer within the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) map viewer.
    • Improve early warning capabilities and enhance CEMS’ mapping portfolio with new products and services to assess flood extents in urban areas.
  2. Food and Water Insecurity:
    • Enrich Copernicus SESA’s portfolio by integrating new vulnerability and fragility indices.
    • Strengthen early warning capabilities and develop proactive geointelligence services for monitoring early signs and triggers of social unrest, population movements, and conflicts related to food and water insecurity.
