CRISTAL is one of the European Union’s Copernicus Expansion Missions and will play a key role in improving our understanding of the Earth’s climate system. As primary objective, the mission will monitor the cryosphere by delivering accurate measurements of sea ice thickness, snow depth and land ice elevation change, providing essential data to support climate research, improve climate models, and contribute to the implementation of the EU Climate Strategy and the objectives of the Paris Agreement. The mission carries two complementary instruments: the Interferometric Radar Altimeter for Ice and Snow (IRIS), operating in Ku and Ka bands, and a Microwave Radiometer, namely AMR-CR, that provides atmospheric corrections to ensure highly accurate topography measurements. Under the new contract, GMV, as prime contractor, together with CLS, will define the ESA Level-2 data products for the cryosphere and hydrology domains and develop the associated open-source processors to be operated within ESA’s Earth Observation Missions, Data and Operations Management Framework for the Copernicus Space Component (EOF-CSC). The activity also covers pre-launch processor validation, support to operational deployment, and maintenance through the commissioning phase of the first CRISTAL satellite. The contract represents a major milestone for GMV. The company is already leading the development of the ESA mission’s Level-0 and Level-1 operational processors within the European Earth Observation Processing Framework (EOPF). Building on this experience, GMV will now be responsible for the development of the entire ESA operational processing chain of the CRISTAL mission, from Level-0 to Level-2. By extending its responsibility to Level-2 processing, GMV will ensure seamless integration between processing levels, consistent data quality, and a unified operational system for operators and end users. This achievement further strengthens GMV’s leadership in operational ground segment processing and its commitment to enabling Europe’s next generation of Copernicus missions.
