Strategic autonomy at the heart of the Global Security and Defense debate

On May 5, GMV’s CEO, Jesús B. Serrano, took part in the second edition of the Global Security and Defense forum, organized by Europa Press in Madrid.

Under the theme “Innovation and Strategic Vision,” the event brought together institutional representatives, business leaders, and industry experts to analyze the strategic, economic, and industrial implications of increasing investment in defense and security, as well as the role the Spanish industrial ecosystem can play in strengthening European security.

Europa Press Executive Chairman Asís Martín de Cabiedes opened the event, followed by Secretary of State for Defense Amparo Valcarce, who emphasized the need to move toward greater strategic autonomy. In this regard, she highlighted the importance of strengthening national operational capabilities, consolidating the industrial and technological base, and directing investment toward critical capabilities.

Jesús B. Serrano participated in the roundtable on strategic and technological autonomy. During his remarks, he stressed the importance of equipping Europe with its own critical space infrastructures and noted that the current context represents a unique opportunity to accelerate such programs. He also underscored the value of having a strong industrial and technological base, supported by a broad and diverse ecosystem including universities, research centers, spin-offs, startups, SMEs, mid-sized companies, and large corporations.

Throughout the event, topics such as the current geopolitical context, challenges and opportunities for the Spanish defense industry, and the role of dual-use technologies as a driver for accelerating technological development were also addressed.

GMV’s participation highlights its role as a key player in the defense ecosystem, providing a technological and innovative perspective on how to transform investment into real operational capabilities and contribute to defense autonomy at both the Spanish and European levels.
