Space Defense Summit Sevilla

On November 22 and 23rd, the Fibes I Exhibition and Conference Center of Seville welcomed the third year of the Space & Defense Industry Seville Summit 2022, the first in-person event following the pandemic, where GMV participated alongside other companies in the space and defense industry to analyze the new challenges in the fields of security, defense, and space and emphasize the technological capacity and skills of a domestic and European business fabric capable of successfully facing the challenges arising in the future.

The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, in his livestreamed talk and the mayor of Seville and chairman of the summit, Antonio Muñoz, presided over the event’s institutional opening, with talks also by the Director-General for Defense Industry and Space of the European Commission, Timo Pesonen; The Secretary Of State of Defense (SEDEF), Maria Amparo Valcarve; and the GMV’s general director, Jesus B. Serrano.

Over two days, important figures from the sector and similar sectors analyzed the current situation the defense, national security, and aerospace industry is experiencing and the challenges it will face. From recruiting tech talent to the need for long-term planning insulated from political changes, involving preparation of security systems for cyber threats.

In his talks, GMV’s general director highlighted the company’s history with the commitment to innovation, underlining the role of technology as a key component in activities and missions, such as satellite navigation and space traffic management. At the same time, he spoke of the importance of technology as a critical and fundamental point in the defense sector. Keeping in mind that some technologies, such as SW-defined systems, state-of-the-art weapons systems, robotics and autonomous platforms, AI, machine learning, and big data are cornerstones of our security and defense, and that two new fields of defense are powered by technology: space and cybersecurity.

GMV’s corporate strategy director, Jorge Potti, took part in the session, “Space as the Axis for Global and Industrial Development,” in which he spoke on the situation the sector is currently experiencing, emphasizing its strategic character and the impact it has on the economy. An innovative sector with high added value that generates exporting and quality employment. He also stressed the importance of continuing to carry out large projects to attract talent. Additionally, he highlighted the development of new capabilities, such as self driving vehicles.

On Wednesday, at the November 23 session, there was a roundtable discussion on “Incorporating the Vision of Women in the Defense, Space, and Technological Development Sector,” with participation by the executive director of strategy and commercial development of Science, Exploration, and Space Transportation at GMV space, Mariella Graziano. In her talk, Graziano highlighted the need for society to work together to find solutions, the importance of promoting STEM careers, and the need for opportunities to be equal, seeking out talent and excellence above all else.

GMV’s notable participation at the summit emphasizes not only the company’s commitment to innovation and technological development in fields such as space and defense but also the company’s position of leadership in the sectors.
