Bellvitge Hospital receives SEPI-IA, GMV’s prototype for lung disease diagnosis

At an event held on March 23, 2026, the Minister of Science, Innovation, and Universities, Diana Morant, signed the transfer of a prototype from the Interstitial Pulmonary Evolutionary Simulation using Artificial Intelligence (SEPI-IA) project to Bellvitge University Hospital, with the aim of improving the diagnosis of rare lung diseases.

The minister was joined, among others, by the Catalan Minister of Health, Olga Pané; the Secretary General for Innovation, Teresa Riesgo; and the Director of the CDTI, José Moisés Martín Carretero.

The session served to present the SEPI-IA project, an innovation initiative that uses artificial intelligence and CT scans to analyze the progression of pulmonary fibrosis and simulate how the disease may evolve in each patient.

The prototype’s technological development involves GMV, a multinational specializing in innovative technology solutions, and Tecnalia, a European research and technology development center.

Carlos Illana, GMV’s project lead, presented the prototype, which will enable faster identification of interstitial lung diseases and improve diagnostic and therapeutic precision. Powered by AI, the system can detect features imperceptible to the human eye, extract data and generate reports automatically.
