The Extremadura Regional Government picks GMV to digitize regional public transportation

The Extremadura Regional Government has awarded GMV the contract to develop and implement a comprehensive platform for the digitalization of regional public transportation. The new system will be based on GMV’s ITS Suite, an open, modular, and scalable technological solution that covers all critical areas of transportation management, including planning, operations, ticketing, data analysis, and passenger information.

A key feature of the project is the introduction of an Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) system, enabling users to validate their journeys via dynamic QR codes and the TMEx contactless card. This solution supports the rollout of an advanced fare model, incorporating discounts, anti-fraud mechanisms, and a compensation module for inter-operator settlements. The platform architecture is also prepared for future integration of bank card payments compliant with the EMV standard.

Additionally, the system includes an Operations Support System (OSS) for real-time vehicle tracking, punctuality management, arrival time estimation, and comprehensive network monitoring. All functionalities will be accessible through a fully web-based, adaptable interface built on open standards such as GTFS, RTIG, and SIRI.

The project also features a user information platform available via web and mobile apps for both Android and iOS devices. Passengers will be able to plan trips, check schedules, track vehicle locations, and manage their accounts, all with a focus on accessibility and multilingual design.

The solution is complemented by advanced analytics and Business Intelligence tools, including Microsoft Power BI, Transit Insights, and WiseTransit. This module will enable demand analysis, usage pattern forecasting, and optimization of resource allocation and planning.

As part of the deployment, GMV will supply 240 onboard DTD200 units to be installed on buses currently lacking CAD/AVL and ticket validation systems. These devices, managed by the Extremadura Regional Government, combine CAD/AVL and Fare Collection System (FCS) functionalities in a single unit featuring a 10-inch touchscreen, QR and NFC readers, thermal printer, GPS/4G module, and support for both CBT and ABT validation.

The rollout will span 14 months, following a phased approach: analysis, development, pilot testing, progressive deployment, integration with local CAD/AVL systems, and full operation. GMV will also manage TMEx card issuance, provide user support, and train the personnel involved.
