GMV showcases advanced technology capabilities to the Community of Madrid

05/05/2026

The Regional Minister for Education, Science and Universities visits the company’s facilities to learn about its developments in quantum computing, artificial intelligence, robotics and space

During the visit, she was introduced firsthand to the Q-MIND project, a strategic initiative promoted by the Community of Madrid to accelerate the development and application of quantum technologies

Led by GMV, the project has a budget exceeding €5.3 million and integrates quantum computing and communications, as well as post-quantum cybersecurity

Kick off proyecto QMind

The Regional Minister for Education, Science and Universities of the Community of Madrid, Mercedes Zarzalejo, visited GMV’s facilities in Tres Cantos today to learn more about Q-MIND (Quantum Madrid for Innovation and New Developments), a strategic initiative backed by the regional government to fast-track the development and real-world application of quantum technologies.

During the visit, the Regional Minister underlined the importance of initiatives like Q-MIND in strengthening the region’s position as a technology leader: “Initiatives such as this project reinforce the Community of Madrid’s leadership as a benchmark hub for innovation and technology, built on collaboration between leading companies, research centers and the broader scientific and technological ecosystem.”

The visit brought together institutional representatives and consortium members, who were given an overview of the project’s main developments, as well as GMV’s capabilities in areas including quantum computing, artificial intelligence and advanced robotics.

Led by GMV, Q-MIND brings together a public-private consortium with a budget of more than €5.3 million. Participants include BBVA, Repsol, QDynamics, QoolNet, Inspiration-Q, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Tecnalia, the Complutense University of Madrid, the Technical University of Madrid and the University of Alcalá. The project aims to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research in quantum technologies and their deployment in real-world environments.

The Regional Minister also emphasized the importance of collaboration between public institutions, industry and academia: “In the scientific and technological field, the Community plans to install the first quantum computer at a university in Madrid, specifically at the Technical University.”

Q-MIND integrates quantum computing, quantum communications (QKD) and post-quantum cybersecurity (PQC), addressing both the opportunities these technologies offer and the challenges they pose for data protection in a future shaped by quantum computing.

GMV also presented the project’s scope and its strong focus on technology transfer, which will enable solutions to be tested and validated in real environments through infrastructures such as MadQCI, the Community of Madrid’s quantum communications network.

Driving regional impact

Beyond its technological dimension, Q-MIND is expected to have a direct impact on the region’s economic and scientific ecosystem by creating high-skilled jobs, attracting talent and reinforcing Madrid’s position as a hub for advanced digital innovation. “Q-MIND represents a major step forward in bringing quantum computing closer to practical use, connecting research with the real needs of industry and public services,” said Luis Fernando Álvarez-Gascón, General Manager of Secure e-Solutions at GMV.

The project builds on experience gained in earlier initiatives such as CUCO—Spain’s first industry-driven quantum computing project, also led by GMV—and marks a further step towards the industrial deployment of these technologies in strategic sectors including energy, banking, telecommunications and defense.

The visit included a tour of several of GMV’s technology areas, including its robotics lab, the Space division’s multi-mission control room and dedicated spaces for exponential technologies, where practical applications of artificial intelligence and quantum computing were showcased.

Q-MIND is co-funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), as part of a program led by the Community of Madrid’s Regional Ministry of Education, Science and Universities.
