On April 26th, the final scheduled demonstrations will take place for the iMUGS (Integrated Modular Unmanned Ground System) project. The primary objective of this project has been to integrate robotics systems with the manned technology that European defense forces already have available.

These demonstrations will take place at the San Juan del Viso military grounds near Madrid, using two modified THeMIS (Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System) unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), along with the software that gives the systems autonomy, both individually and for swarming operations.

The project has received €32.6 million in investment, as part of the European Commission’s objective of increasing the EU’s defensive capabilities and strategic autonomy through the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP).

This project has been carried out by a consortium of 13 companies led by Milrem Robotics, with GMV being responsible for coordinating the command and control and C4ISR interoperability subproject (which has included command, control, communications, IT, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems). That subproject has been used to develop the tactical C2ISR component, which makes it possible to plan and execute joint operations between manned and unmanned systems; to use and distribute data from the UGV’s sensors; and to ensure interoperability and standardization of interfaces with existing C2 systems, C4I databases, and ISR networks.
