CUCO

The CUCO project is a pioneering initiative in quantum computing applied to strategic sectors of the Spanish economy, including energy, finance, space, defense, and logistics. It is promoted by a consortium of seven companies (Amatech, BBVA, DAS Photonics, GMV, Multiverse Computing, Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech, and Repsol), together with five research centers (BSC, CSIC, DIPC, ICFO, and Tecnalia), and the Universitat Politècnica de València. Funded by the CDTI and supported by the Ministry of Science and Innovation under the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, CUCO has become the first major Spanish quantum computing project. Its purpose is to advance the scientific and technological development of quantum algorithms through public-private collaboration.

The project aims to speed up the adoption of quantum technologies and to explore their potential compared with classical computing in real-world use cases such as Earth observation, climate change mitigation, optimization of logistics chains, and complex financial calculations or signals intelligence. Beyond its technological significance, CUCO supports environmental sustainability by developing more energy efficient algorithms, and it seeks to position Spain and its participating organizations as European leaders in the quantum field while opening the door to participation in international programs such as Quantum Flagship, Horizon Europe, Digital Europe, and the European Defence Fund.
