The infrastructure enables the efficient pooling and sharing of satellite communications capabilities contributed by various Member States, ensuring reliable communications for critical governmental operations. The expansion awarded to GMV reinforces the Hub’s strategic role within the European space architecture and responds to the growing need for resilient, permanently available services in scenarios such as crisis management, border and maritime surveillance, critical infrastructure protection, and support for operations in remote environments and polar regions.GMV leads the GOVSATCOM Hub at the head of a European industrial consortium that includes Indra and Hisdesat, alongside other European companies that have actively contributed to the development of the system. The project combines GMV’s expertise in space systems and cybersecurity, Indra’s technological leadership in communications and command-and-control systems, and Hisdesat’s operational track record in secure governmental communications. The primary contract for the design, development, and deployment of the GOVSATCOM Hub was awarded by EUSPA to GMV in 2024, with a total budget envelope of €107 million. GOVSATCOM currently integrates satellite capabilities contributed by various Member States, with a total of eight satellites operated by five countries and anticipates the progressive incorporation of additional capabilities.GOVSATCOM is part of the European Union Space Programme, alongside Galileo, Copernicus, EGNOS, and SSA. The system is positioned as a key element in strengthening Europe’s strategic autonomy in the field of secure communications and in advancing toward greater autonomous operational capability and interoperability in security and defense matters. This contract is being carried out within the framework of a program funded by the European Union. The views expressed in this press release are solely the responsibility of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of the European Commission and the European Union Space Programme Agency (EUSPA).
