S34I

Secure and Sustainable Supply of Raw Materials for EU Industry

S34I

The S34I project develops innovative, data-driven methods for analyzing Earth Observation (EO) data to support systematic mineral exploration and continuous monitoring throughout all phases of the mining lifecycle, such as, exploration, extraction, closure, and post-closure. Validation activities are carried out at six sites across Europe: land and coastal exploration in Spain and Portugal, extraction in Austria, and post-closure monitoring in Finland and Germany.

S34I leverages Copernicus and other satellite sensors (optical and radar), while complementary platforms, such as airborne, low-altitude systems, ground-based and in-situ techniques, and fieldwork are used for calibration, validation, and to enhance spatial and spectral resolution.

The project will deliver innovative EO-based products and services to improve or newly enable mineral mapping, environmental and mine monitoring, and mine safety across various stages of the mine life cycle.

GMV leads the Method Pipelines and Prototyped Services, developing cutting-edge AI techniques for identifying active mining zones and detecting potential instability risks. The University of Porto coordinates the project and includes 20 other partners from 13 countries
