GMV key to the definition of Galileo's future commercial service

The European Union has awarded a GMV-led consortium one of two parallel studies for defining Galileo’s future commercial service.

The aim of the study is to define the mission requirements of the service, a service that is in turn divided into two. The high-precision service, geared towards the markets of topography, civil engineering, precision agriculture, cadastral surveying, etc, will provide professional users with centimeter-level accuracy. The authentication service will guarantee users that the calculated position has not been tampered with, vouching for the lack of any spoofing when used for road tolling, GNSS-based insurance policies, etc.

Galileo’s commercial service will be provided through a specific signal in the E6 frequency band, backed up by dedicated protection mechanisms.

The study will also design a preliminary architecture both of service and signal, while also analyzing performance. A commercial plan and business study will also be carried out.

As well as priming the contract GMV is also responsible for mission requirements and the part of the study relating to the high precision service. Extensive use is planned here of magicPPP, GMV’s inhouse solution from the magicGNSS family, allowing GNSS users to determine their position or trajectory to the nearest centimeter.

Other consortium members are Logica, in charge of authentication matters, and Helios, responsible for the business study and commercial plan.
This project wins GMV pole position in the next implementation steps of Galileo’s commercial service, including development of a demonstrator in 2014.
