GMV Improves the capabilities of the Spanish Space Surveillance and Tracking Operations Centre (S3TOC)

Following the award of a contract last year to improve the S3TOC’s computing capabilities, GMV has successfully delivered the solution and is now starting to enhance the DPC and analysts’ room

GMV is also leading a study to analyze the future version of the S3TOC system

GMV, a leading provider of innovative technology solutions, is excited to announce significant enhancements to the S3TOC as part of the Spanish SST project, funded by AEE (Agencia Espacial Española) and managed by ESA (the European Space Agency) through a Third Party Agreement. These updates are designed to improve computing capabilities and performance, as well as to expand and adapt the data processing center (DPC) and the analysts’ room for the future.

The latest enhancements include:

Additional computing capacity: the number and technology of servers has been improved, the speed and structure of the communications network has been enhanced, and a more robust system has been implemented.

Advanced security features: the S3TOC has implemented state-of-the-art security measures to protect user data and ensure privacy.

Enhanced DPC and analysts’ room: the DPC has been upgraded with state-of-the-art technology to significantly increase its computing capabilities, including new cooling systems and security features. The S3TOC facilities can now accommodate up to 14 analysts, with a wide screen ready to be used to make our space a safer place.

With the new enhancements, the S3TOC is ready for a new era in space, with increasing uncontrolled space assets and mega-constellations crowding the skies.

Additionally, GMV is leading a group (including partners HISDESAT and ImmediaIT) that is currently analyzing the future needs and capabilities of the next generation S3TOC, the upcoming V3.

According to Alberto Águeda, Director of Space Surveillance and Traffic Management at GMV, “with this new contract, GMV is further solidifying its position as the European leader in space surveillance and tracking. These enhancements position the S3TOC, as a key contributor to the EU SST system, at the forefront of SST technology, ready to tackle the challenges posed by increasing space traffic and mega-constellations. GMV remains dedicated to leading the way in this area, ensuring a safer and more secure space environment for all”.

Salvador Martí, S3T Project Manager at ESA, said “The upgrade of the S3TOC performances, together with the installation in the new, larger, and more secure facilities, is an important step forward in the evolution of S3T to provide a better and more important contribution to the European Space Surveillance and Tracking capacity. The S3TOC will be ready to operate with the increased detection capabilities of the S3T Space Debris sensors”.

About the S3TOC

The S3TOC is part of the S3T system of the European EUSST program. It provides collision avoidance (CA) services to more than 400 satellites from 40 different users worldwide. In addition to this service, it oversees the coordinated planning and tasking of space objects using the sensors involved in the EUSST program.
