Flight Safety

Air traffic is expected to double during the first 20 years of the twenty-first century. Using current onboard and ground systems this traffic increase could lead to an equal or even greater increase in accidents. Even though aircraft accidents would still in fact be rare events, such an increase would be seen as unacceptable by society.

New systems and solutions need to be sought to keep accidents at their current low level. To do this we believe that we need to supply pilots with new systems that allow them to take the correct decision at all times. Satellite-based navigation and communication systems should also be brought in to improve the use of available airspace under all weather conditions.

Beneficial consequences of this improved management would be a reduction in air pollution, noise and fuel consumption as well as enhanced safety.

GMV is participating with the main companies and bodies of the aerospace sector (AENA, Thales, Airbus, Eurocopter Dassault) in several aeronautical R&D projects to develop flight safety systems for civil aviation and improve air traffic management throughout Europe, as well as developing operational systems. GMV also collaborates with other bodies such as the European Space Agency and the European Commission in the development of real time software for safety-critical embedded systems.
